Active directory caching. Updates in active directory are not instant, but are updated asynchronously and lookups are probably cached to. This means that if you have just left or joined a group it may take some time (5-30 minutes) before this change is live.

The ES also maintains its own cache so it doesn’t have to ask the active directory server about group membership for each search. The ES cache last for up to 5 minutes.

All in all cache is necessary for maintaining a fast system, but may make testing more difficult. Thankfully the ES has a system to view what user information that is being used. In the admin interface go to the “End users” page and click on the user you are using to test with. There you can see what groups your user are a member of. Make sure that the user you are using to test with don’t are a member of a group that are member of the group you have granted access to. This is sometimes easy to overlook in the active directory management interface. Use the “End users” function described above to double check.

* Browser caching of user credentials

The ES are using basic authentication for login. Unfortunately there is no way of logout when using that. If you ever has been logged in as a different user try to open a different browser to double check that you are logged in with the correct user.

* Reboot the ES

It should not be necessary to reboot the ES for your changes to take effect. However if you have tried the steps above, and a reboot fixes the issue this is an indicator of some types of bugs.

I’ve tested this again. Setup active directory options and pulled in the users. I enabled access for two users only. I created two Intranet crawls. On each crawl I selected the “Access level” tab and choose the “Group” radio button and selected different groups for each of the crawls. Each user is in only one of the selected groups. That means when performing a search as one of the users you will only get results from one of the crawls correct? Unfortunately that is not the case both users I get results from both crawls. I have attached a few of pictures showing one of the crawls access level and that one of my users does not belong to that group. The final picture shows the number of results that user gets by doing a search. If I am understanding correctly a user has to be part of selected group to be able to get any results from that crawl when preforming a search.
