This is a fantastic appliance, and I am thus far blown away with the potential of this product. There are two key issues I’m having, however:

1. Most of my users run Internet Explorer 8. When I run IE8 and view the search page, all of the links and nav appear in Norwegian. I’m sure it’s a lovely language, but I’m in the USA, so English would be most convenient. This issue only occurs when I use IE; but Chrome and Firefox work swimmingly.

2. Unrelated to number 1: Regardless of the browser I use, I am unable to open filenames that appear in the search results when I click on them. *Click*, and nothing happens.

Thank you for your positive feedback. I am glad you like it. Especially if one already have a VMware/VirtualBox/Xen setup, it is nice to be able to have a basic enterprise search system up and running in almost no time

1) We uses the language that is defined as the default keyboard language to select how to display the search results. If it’s an language we don’t support, or don’t understand, it is supposed to default to English. Apparently this prosess must be failing for you. I will have a developer looking into it.

A temporary quick fix wold be to add lang=en to the url when you uses the ES. For example for our demo system, this link should always display the interface in English: http://demo.searchdaimon.com/webclient2/?lang=en (Username: demo, Password: 1234Asd).

2) Is the files you want to open on a windows share?

It is supposed to work just fine in IE 8 to open windows shares. For Firefox you will have to set a registry key. Please see http://www.searchdaimon.com/documentation/#cID31 for instructions.

Bdw, The file:// protocol have a long an troublesome history in IE: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/freeassociations/archive/2005/05/19/420059.aspx . Maybe a recently Windows update have made the file:// link stopped working in IE 8, or there is some new security policy hindering it. I will install a copy of IE 8 my self and see if we cant find a way around this.

Thank you for your reply. With regard to the IE language issue, when I stipulated ?lang=en, everything worked well in English. One key remaining issue is that regardless of what browser is used, the date info for search results is still displayed in Norwegian—for example: cache - torsdag 4. mai 2006 21:36 (it should say Thursday May, 4 2006).

As for file access, I am able to open files in IE8 when clicked. However, Chrome and Firefox do not allow me to access files on click. I will look at the documentation you mentioned, however it might be useful to find a way around this in future versions.

FYI: I found browser extensions for both Firefox and Chrome that handle file:// local links. The Chrome extension seems to work great, however the Firefox extension will only take local links in the following format: file:///// (5 slashes). I did some testing and all three browsers do accept 5 slashes (file://///), but since the SearchDaimon search results are relayed with two slashes, only Chrome (with extension installed) and IE can open these.

For Firefox, did you try the steps mention at “Opening files from network shares in FireFox” ? Thus steps have been verified to work quit recently… What version of Firefox are you running?

We have found the underlying cause that makes the date and interface language incorrect. It’s a small software bug that should be easily fixed. I hope to have a fix ready tomorrow.

Total agree. That something as basic as this don’t work out of the box is unfortunately. But the browser vendors see local file access as a potential security hole, and forbids it. To make the matters worse, they keep changing what you have to do to get it working.

We have found and fixed the bug that made the date end interface language to be in Norwegian A fix that goes out to everybody will be in the next general update.

However you may update this manual now.

Download this two rpm files:

Then, in the admin panel, go to Software updates->Advanced and install this updates.

Be aware that the boitho-searchdbb rpm restarts the search kernel, so it may take a couple of minutes before the ES is ready to answer searches again (the search kernel normaly uses 1-5 minutes to do some analysis and caches some data in memory during startup).
