I’m testing the virtual appliance.  When I attempt to set up an active directory user system using my actual domain info or the fake info I get an error message “Unable to connect to user system. Error:”. 
so far I have:
set a static IP & dns servers
checked to make sure the dns resolves properly
set up time to the correct timezone

Any ideas what I might be missing?

The ES uses LDAP for connecting to Active Directory. Unfortunately Active Directory is very bad on reporting back errors, so normally one only get a blank error, and no hint on what is wrong if any of the input parameters are wrong.

In the admin panel there is a “Statistics & Logs” pages with a tab named log. Do you see any hints on what can be wrong in the Active directory error log and the Active directory access log?

You should also try to reboot the Authentication Daemon service. Do so from the “Manage services” section in the administrator panel. ( rebooting shouldn’t be necessary, but it has fixed a lot of it problems before )

The ES uses LDAP to talk with the active directory server. This is on and the port is open as default when a Windows server assumes the role as an Active Directory server, but if you have a firewall between the ES and the Active Directory server you must allow traffic through port 389.

As I mentioned earlier I can’t add a fake domain either. 

the settings I am using are:
domain:  <mydomain.com>
IP:  Ip address of AD server
password: 
user:  <username of user with domain join permission>

I’m leaving all the LDAP fields blank.

I just downloaded the plain .ovf and I joined AD domain ok.  So problem solved so far.

My host system is vsphere 5.1, and I downloaded the vmware ovf from searchdaimon.com.

I am trying the same thing. I can confirm that the VMWare OVF gives an error but the plain one does not. The VMWare should be pulled from the site and it should be debugged to see why it behaves differently. The IP field actually requires IP addresses. Third, even though I was able to add AD, it does not see any users.

This is quite strange. I have just tried both versions and both was able to connect to all the Active Directory servers I have access to.

I will investigate further, but it would help a lot if you could tell me a little more about your setup.

* What version og Windows are you using on your Active Directory server?
* What host system ( VMware/Xen/VirtualBox ) and version did you run this on?

Do you still have both ESs running? If so could you do the following on both:

* In the ES administrator interface could you go to “Software updates” and on the “Software updates” tab click the “Check for updates” button. Dos it sees that your system is up to date?
