How much space would one expect to use when crawling a windows file server with about 1 TB of doc/xls/pds etc. I know that is a very difficult question to answer spesific, but I’m interested in any ballpark figures.

We get asked this question a lot, but unfortunately it has been very hard to predict disk usage.

As rule of thumb so will the ES use up to 1/3 of the original file server size, because we only stored the text compressed and an inverted index of the words. But it all depends. For example the 7.9GB test collection “Enron files” from http://www.opentestsearch.com/test-sets/ take only 1.1 GB of space in the ES. This is probably do to that older file format was very ineffective and its data was uncompressed. For example a Word 97 .doc file contains about 70% makeup and white space that the ES don’t have to store. But in the new .docx format the file is compressed with zip, and will take up less space on your file server for the same text.

Your best course of action is probably to set it to something like 200GB for a 1TB file server and start to crawl. You can always increase the disk further later (if you are on a virtual platform. See here for more info: http://www.searchdaimon.com/documentation/C29/ ).

Share: 1061392 files in 53725 folders.  Total size: 395GB.
