I modified the drive spaces on the vmdk file using VMWare Player settings, but upon starting up the VM, I’m not seeing the increased storage (du -h still shows 60% used, 4GB free). I suspect there’s another command I need to be running in linux to get it to use the additional space, but have yet to find an answer.

Is there any hope for my situation?

Are you sure you have increased the second hard drive? And have you done a full reboot of the Searchdaimon ES virtual machine?

There are some Linux commands that has to be runned before Linux sees the extra space, but thus are runned automatically at startup if needed.

It has been a while seen I used the standalone VMware Player, so not 100% sure if you has to do anything special there to increase the disk, but I can try to find out if the steps above don’t resolve you issue.

I shut down the VM, increased the drive space for both drives (50GB for disk 1, 60GB for disk 2), restarted the VM, didn’t see the space so I rebooted again, and upon logging in again, still don’t see the space:

Your posted VMWare disk sizing instructions are inline with what I did, and I’ve followed them out to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1004071 which, describes various methods for getting the OS to see the revised storage space, but ultimately all the linux links I’ve found involve fdisk, which doesn’t appear to be installed on this system.

I’m very familiar with working with VM’s, but almost always under a Windows environment. I’ve worked with Unix long ago, but have little experience with this type of thing under Linux.

I upped it to 80GB just to make sure I did everything right and it had no effect. I found fdisk in /sbin (just wasn’t part of the path), but it shows no valid partition table for that drive:

Are you using a very old version of the Searchdaimon ES, or did you not download it from http://www.searchdaimon.com/download/ ?

(if you did, do you remember of you downloaded the VMware, VirtualBox or “Plain OVF” version? )

Normally the /boithoData disk resists on /dev/sdb, but on the output from df -h you posted it is on /dev/sda. That may case this behavior.

The resize command are located in the /etc/init.d/sddata_resize file . Can you please post its content her so I can see what it tries to run?

I downloaded it from http://www.searchdaimon.com/download/ last week. I’m fairly confident I downloaded the VMWare version. I did request it to update as soon as I had it up and running, but it said no updates were available. Your script contains:

The file I downloaded (I still have the original .zip) was Searchdaimon_ES_2.7_VMWare.zip.

This is super strange…. Maybe VMware player changed around on the disks layout somehow so sdb becomes sda, and vis versa?

Anyway this means that the command for resizing the disk is wrong on your setup because it refers to the wrong disk.

If this ES installation is just a test installation you can try changing the command in /etc/init.d/sddata_resize to be:

I just tried this on VMware player me self and the same happened to me also.

I did update the script and everything worked perfectly on reboot. Although this is just a test installation at the moment, the plan/hope was to migrate these vmdk’s over to an ESXi server (and likely upgrade to a paid version for the permissions features) once I have everything working well and get the company’s approval.

Will the swapped drives cause me issues long term, or do you think I’ll be ok going forward leaving things as-is? I have a few other issues to work out yet, so I’ve got some time before we reach production anyway.

I don’t believe this will cause you any trouble in the future, but I am looking into it. It appears that VMware has done some changes to their Player so the first disk is no set to be an IDE disk, regardless of what we have in the configuration. Thus the second disk get labeled sda not sdb.

I am currently investigating this, and will get back to you when I have more information.
