That is correct. The ES dos not support handling users on its own. Maybe it would have been nice to have some kind of user system locally so users could sign in to the ES and search, but that would also be a huge security hole. A search engine is supposed to index other systems, without adding or subtracting anything when it comes to security.

If the system you index require a username/password to access it, it is better to connect to that systems user management system. In a Windows environment this is normally Active Directory.
