I am unable to get the crawl to start, as I receive the error: 401 Access denied, or 401 Unauthorised.
I have tried several sets of valid credentials (including admin level!) - same result.

I have tried with, and without, the domainname\  optional userprefix.

My intranet site is hosted on a SBS2008 server, and is running Sharepoint.

I have tried using both the “intranet” connector, and the “Sharepoint connector”. Only difference with the Sharepoint connector is the error is:  401 Unauthorized at (eval 3) line 49

Looking in the logs it appears to be requesting robots.txt (which I do not have for this site).

Not much to go on I know, but can you offer any suggestions?

UPDATE: by using sharepoint, and admin credentials, and trying different combinations, I managed to get it to give me the big green tick of success.
No errors.
No problems.

No documents indexed. Not one…?
Site contains a mix of html content, and linked documents (mostly MSWord format). 

There are two ways of indexing SharePoint. The Intranet crawler will do a normal web crawl, and the SharePoint connector will use the SharePoint web services.
