Hi,

I am testing out the VM appliance and have got it to trawl both our intranet and web servers fine.

But - I cant get it to look at any file shares to index ( SMB )

If I hit a browser with \\vm-fileserver\users\steve.burgess I can see my files fine.
If I enter the same share into a session to crawl it replies :

Could not submit crawling request.
Error: crawlsmb.c: Error! Could not open directory //vm-fileserver/users/steve.burgess: for dir “//vm-fileserver/users/steve.burgess” at src/crawlSMB/crawlsmb.c:546

The fileserver has a share for “users” - and going in at that level also fails. The target box is a windows-2003 server holding the share - I have checked that it is using my credentials for the crawl.

This can be a couple of things. You should start by:

1)
Have you supply the username with the ad domain name in the format “domain\user” ? For example we have a domain called sdtest.local here. My user is “runarb”. Some fileservers accept only runarb as username, some needs sdtest\runarb. (if that works you also have to set domain as user prefix to resolw the username correct at runtime ).

2)
Is “//vm-fileserver/users/” the real name of your share, or have you anonymized it?

The name “vm-fileserver” is not a qualified DNS name, but has to be resolved to an ip address by something called NetBios. This is notoriously buggy. I wold recommend that you use a full DNS name, like vm-fileserver.mydomain.com or the ip address to access it.

If that doesn’t help you should test to connect by smbclient directly. The ES uses a computer library called smbclient to crawl Windows shares. You can log into the console and try to run smbclient directly. Smbclient may sometimes give better error messages. It can also be run with a “-d 5” swish that make it print out more debug info.

The format for smbclient is
smbclient //share. example.net/folder -U “domain\user”

When you get smbclient to work, use the same settings in the admin to crawl the collection.

I’m having the same problem, and verified it does work from the searchdaimon VM using smbclient as per your example. (I even su’d to the boitho user).

The one thing I see is that the server that doesn’t work is Windows 2008 R2 (smbclient reports OS=[Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 7601 Service Pack 1] Server=[Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise 6.1]), while another one (same domain, same user) that does work is OS=[Windows Server 2003 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 5.2].
