how to use hostname instead of ip-address?

I’m using the searchdaimon virtualbox vm and I’m trying to reach the searchdaimon GUI using a domain name instead of the IP address

http://searchdaimon instead of http://192.168.3.25

I modified /etc/hosts accordingly both in my client and searchdaimon vm but it does not work and, despite the fact that it should be something simple to do I can’t figure out why.

Even the ping behaves strangly

ping IP => works
ping searchdaimon => does not

Same thing for the ssh.

Is there a firewall runnig?

Any help?

You should not have to do anything on the vm to get this working. You only have to add the ip in dns or in the hots file for each pc that shal use the name.

What do you have in your host file on your pc.

Jeez!!! I have a mistyped IP :-D

Believe it or not but I checked it twice and I didn’t notice the “3” instead of “8” ....

I’m deeply sorry for bothering. Problem solved, thank you!
